Retina Treatment – Injections, Laser & Surgery

The retina is the light sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Vision can be damaged by disorders that affect the retina. Retina treatment can be with injections, laser or surgery depending on the nature of the retinal problem. Our experienced Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon has special training in diagnosing retinal problems.

EPIRETINAL MEMBRANE

Epiretinal membrane is tissue on the surface of the retina that contracts and causes crinkling of the underlying retina. This causes distortion of the vision: straight lines look bent. Treatment is surgery to remove the membrane from the surface of the retina.

MACULAR HOLE

A defect in the central part of the retina, or macula, is called a macular hole. Because the macula is the most important part of the retina, a macular hole has a major impact on the vision. It’s possible to close macular holes using surgery.

RETINAL DETACHMENT

When the retina becomes detached from the back of the eye, it stops working properly. Symptoms include a shadow appearing in the vision, typically accompanied by floaters (lines or specks drifting in the vision) and flashing lights. Surgery is required to re-attach the retina.

AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION

Age-Related Macular Degeneration exists in two main forms, colloquially known as “dry” and “wet”. The dry form is slowly progressive. The wet form causes rapid damage to the retina and vision due to leakage of blood and fluid from abnormal blood vessels. Medical injections can be used to treat wet macular degeneration.

RETINAL VEIN OCCLUSION

If the blood vessels supplying the retina with nutrients and oxygen become blocked, this can cause the retina and vision to be damaged. Sometimes, the vital central part of the retina becomes swollen with fluid. This swelling can be treated with medical injections.

DIABETIC EYE DISEASE

Diabetes can cause problems with the retina, ranging from abnormal fluid collections to bleeding inside the eye. Available treatments include medicine in the form of injections, retinal laser treatments, and surgery in severe cases.
