Look After Your Eyes, Ladies…

Studys show that significantly more women than men deal with vision-threatening problems over their lifetime (sorry, ladies…). That’s why we would like to highlight the importance of understanding why this happens and offer simple advice to help make informed choices of how to look after your eyes.

Pre-eclampsia

A recent study published in Obstetrics and Gynecology suggests that Pre-Eclampsia may be associated with retinal disease in the mother later in life.

Mortality rates

Women generally live longer than men. So, higher numbers of ladies develop eye problems simply because they have more exposure to the environmental factors that contribute to eye diseases.

What else?

Autoimmune Diseases overall are a higher risk for women than men. Diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and Sjogren syndrome can all affect the eyes – and they’re more likely to occur in women than men.

Some suggest that hormones play a significant part in these statistics. Birth control, pregnancy, menopause, hormone supplements or replacements, and fertility drugs cause hormones to shift and change.

So… How to Look After Your Eyes

  • See your eyecare specialist for a comprehensive eye test every couple of years
  • Eat a well-balanced diet
  • Wear sunglasses
  • Quit smoking
  • Always ensure correct usage of contact lenses as per your prescription and as instructed

Fortunately, people who speak to their doctor about signs and symptoms of vision problems increase the chances of early detection and treatment.  In many cases, this can lessen the severity and result in better overall eye health.
