Glaucoma & Family Foresight – Looking out for your loved ones
What is Family Foresight?
Recently the International Glaucoma Association launched a new campaign called Family Foresight which urges people of all ages and backgrounds – especially those with existing eye conditions such as glaucoma to encourage their close relatives to make sure that they are getting their eyes tested on a regular basis. The national guidelines recommend that you do this at least once every two years and yes this includes people who feel that their eyesight is just fine!
How having an eye test can really make a difference
As mentioned in our previous article Glaucoma – It’s time to have an eye test, the symptoms of glaucoma can develop without any significant or clear warning signs, i.e. our eyesight might seem ok but behind the scenes there could be the beginnings of a serious eye condition developing and the earlier this is spotted, the better the range of treatment options available to you.
Look out for your loved ones
This is a particularly important issue if you yourself have been diagnosed with glaucoma as this means that your family members are up to four times more likely to develop the condition compared to someone without a family history. In the UK, glaucoma is the most treatable form of blindness yet there are as many as 300,000 people in the UK living with undiagnosed glaucoma and we can each do our part by keeping an eye out for our loved ones.
