How can we help?
About Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty
Further loss of sight in people with glaucoma can be prevented by various treatments that attempt to lower the pressure within the eye (the Intra-ocular Pressure – IOP). If your eye surgeon has recommended Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) it is usually because you have open-angle glaucoma in the early stages.
With regards to treatment, either eye drops are not a suitable treatment or eye drops alone have not lowered your IOP enough to prevent further damage to your sight. The Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty procedure will help you to keep the sight that you still have, but will not improve your sight or restore any sight that you may have already lost.
This area is called the trabecular meshwork, which is towards the front of the eye & around the periphery of the iris. It is where fluid that is formed within the eye drains out of the eye. The application of the laser to the trabecular meshwork appears to alter its biological function in such a way as to effectively produce a reduction in the IOP.
The SLT procedure is quick and typically painless, and can be performed as an outpatient procedure.
The IOP is carefully monitored during the very important post-treatment clinic visit and important interventions may need to be done, depending on the IOP found on assessment at the follow-up clinic.
In the majority of patients, a Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty will achieve a low IOP about 8 weeks after the procedure is done, although typically patients already using eye drops for glaucoma will still need to continue with their use.
The pressure in the eye may possibly increase after the treatment. Extra eye pressure drops may be needed after the laser treatment. Rarely, surgery may be required in the very unusual event that the eye pressure rises to a very high pressure and does not come down.
There may be some inflammation in the eye immediately after treatment. Treatment with anti-inflammatory drops may be needed.
