Before Buying Your Sunglasses… Read This

We’re all aware we must protect our eyes from the sun.

Not only to slow down wrinkles and take care of the delicate skin surrounding our eyes (to stop us ageing quicker!) but on a more serious note, stop harmful UV rays from damaging our sight. We need to raise awareness of the potential damage the sun’s powerful UV rays can do, and educate that there are sunglasses on the market which don’t adhere to the correct British Standards.

So our message this month is BE AWARE, and look out for a CE Mark on the glasses before you buy them (even if they do look fabulous).

Sunglasses for everyone

Many young adults put fashion and price before safety protection for their eyes.  But…. here’s the best part, good sunglasses don’t need to be expensive.  Both lower and high end products offer the same protection so there’re choices to suit all budgets.

The College of Optometists recommends that everyone buying new sunglasses needs to check they have the CE Mark and British Standard BS EN ISO 12312-1:2013, which ensures that the sunglasses offer a safe level of UV protection.

Typical damage from UV rays ranges from cataracts and AMD to conditions such as skin cancer. So before you hit the beach, check your glasses hold the mark.  If they don’t, bin them and have a great excuse to go shopping for some new ones!

Peace of mind for your eyes during this glorious summertime

Our advice?  Buy good quality, dark sunglasses that hold the CE mark.
